Florida Ranks High for Serious Bicycle Accident Injuries and Deaths
Florida has always been one the fastest-growing states in the nation and for 2020 we remain in the top 5 according to USNews.com with a growth rate of 1.12% and a total population of 21.7 million people. Most people and businesses in Florida are happy to see the growth but more people means more traffic and more traffic accidents.
Bicycle accidents, injuries, and deaths are very high in Florida, in fact California, Florida and Texas are the most dangerous states for cycling, according to a recent report released by CarInsurance.org. The report found that the three states accounted for about 41% of the nation’s cyclist fatalities between 2014 and 2017.
Injuries to bicyclists are particularly serious because victims do not have the protection of bumpers and airbags, usually only helmets and many riders don’t wear them.
Often bicyclists say “it won’t happen to me” because they think their skills are so advanced they will avoid an accident, but it can happen to anyone. Recently the Sheriff of Volusia County, Florida was struck from behind while riding his bicycle. Sheriff Mike Chitwood was fortunate that he did not suffer serious injuries when a hit & run driver struck him and then left the scene of the accident.
